Date: Sui Dynasty (c. 581-617 CE)

Medium: Painted & Glazed pottery

Size: 15-17” H x 14” L

Description: A selection of delightfully glazed and painted female and male equestrians from the Sui Dynasty. The ensuing Tang Dynasty was famous for horse and equestrian sculptures in pottery. The early sculptures were, however, predominantly from the Sui. Most all painted straw glazed figures of the type seen here that were done in the Tang tended to be lively and slightly more primitive in appearance. This initially was probably due to increased production. The appaloosa pattern seen on these horses is also one of the least used decorations on Sui Horses.
